The Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) Product Design and Development Division has created a technical conference focusing on plastics design for injection molding and 3D printing.  Titled “Successful Plastic Part Design,” the conference will take place March 6-7, 2018 in Gurnee, IL, at the Holiday Inn Gurnee Convention Center.  For more visit: www.spe-pd3.org


SPE’s Product Design and Development Division, known as PD3, organized the conference in collaboration with the Society’s Chicago and Milwaukee Sections.

John Bozzelli and Michael Sepe will lead a series of in-depth sessions that will address all aspects of the design process for injection molding.

John Bozzelli is a graduate of Marietta College (BS) and Ohio University (MS).  Twenty years with Dow Plastics provided extensive experience in polymer synthesis, development, production, and processing.  Competent in part design and resin characterization, his specialty is practical, hands-on injection molding training and troubleshooting.  Frequent contributed articles in Plastics Technology magazine have highlighted his concept of “Scientific Molding.”

Michael Sepe has worked in the plastics industry since 1975 in both manufacturing and research and development.  He is an independent consultant based in Flagstaff, Arizona with clients throughout North America.  Mr. Sepe assists clients with material selection, design for manufacturability, process optimization, troubleshooting, and failure analysis.

In addition to seven sessions on injection molding, there will be four on 3D printing (additive manufacturing):

  • “Simulation Driven Design for 3D Printing”– Scott Ziemba, Altair Engineering, Inc.
  • “Additive Manufacturing with Polymers: Beyond the Prototype” — Duann Scott, Autodesk, Inc.
  • “Production Using 3D Printing” — Mike Roosa, Midwest Prototyping, LLC
  • “Design for Manufacturing for Additive Manufacturing” — David Tucker, HP, Inc.

“Improvements in 3D printing technology and the introduction of new industry suppliers now enable plastic part engineers and designers to consider using this process to manufacture production parts with confidence,” said Al McGovern, conference chair.
